From 'World-Honoured One! We now would take pleasure in speaking a parable to clarify this meaning' onward is the second part, extensively recounting their assimilation of understanding. It is again divided into three: first, requesting to take pleasure in speaking; second, properly speaking the parable; third, applying the parable. The preceding Dharma explanation briefly recounted the matters of Śākyamuni's lifetime teachings of both Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna without exhausting them; now, by raising the parable to extensively set forth the immeasurable matters and the dharma-gates from beginning to end, they can reveal the sentiments of delusion and awakening and praise the Buddha's merits. 'To clarify this meaning': although the text of the parable is long, it merely clarifies the meaning of loss and gain. The first two sections are loss, and the latter section is gain; the parable is set up to clarify these two meanings. From 'Suppose there was a man' onward is the second part, opening the parable. Now, the meaning of the parable is explained through three sections: first, the section on the purpose; second, the section on fewer or more; third, the section on assimilating understanding.
