From "I was among the number of the sixteen" onwards, the verses summarize the second major section: preaching the Dharma in the present. The prose text has four parts: first, the Dharma; second, the parable; third, the application; fourth, the clasping together. Here they are summarized in full. The first two verses summarize the first part. In the text above there were two parts: first, preaching the great; next, preaching the small. Here it only summarizes the great. From "Like a perilous, evil road" onwards, the verses summarize the second part: preaching through a parable. Above there were three parts: first, initially preaching the parable of the Mahāyāna; second, midway preaching the parable of the lesser [vehicle]; third, subsequently returning to preach the parable of the great. Here they are summarized in full. In the initial parable above there were three parts: first, the evil road to be crossed; second, the persons seeking to cross; third, the guide leading them. Here they are summarized in full. "Many venomous beasts" means having the afflictions of craving and views, which can harm the dharmakāya and the life of wisdom, hence they are "venomous beasts." "Without water or grass" means lacking the Mahāyāna's outflow-free concentration and wisdom with which to nourish oneself. "Countless tens of millions of people" summarizes the second part: the people wishing to cross. "At that time there was a guide" summarizes the third part: leading them.
