The verses have three parts: first, one verse, generally presenting encouragement and exhortation; second, fifteen and a half verses, properly versifying the prose; third, two verses, concluding with praise of the person who preaches the Dharma. Within the second part, versifying the three sections of the prose above, there are three: the first four verses versify praising the Dharma. Above, praising the Dharma had five parts; here it only versifies the fourth, praising by reference to practice. Above in the prose, praising with reference to practice had four: Dharma, parable, application, explanation; here it only versifies the two matters of the parable and application. "Decisively comprehending the śrāvaka Dharma": formerly, not having opened the provisional and revealed the real, one did not know that the śrāvaka [vehicle] was not ultimate; now, having opened the provisional and revealed the real, one definitely knows that the śrāvaka [vehicle] is not the ultimate, but merely an expedient means for entering the Mahāyāna. Speaking of the king of sūtras: because this sūtra is sovereign in opening and uniting the provisional and real of the present and the past, it is called a king; furthermore, being uniquely one without a second is also the meaning of king. From "If a person preaches this sūtra" onward, the second, four and a half verses, versify the method of propagating the sūtra. From "If after my extinction" onward, seven verses, versify the third, evoking wondrous omens. The text above had four, but now it is expanded into five, though not in order. The first three verses versify the first, dispatching transformed assemblies; the next one and a half verses versify the third, seeing the Buddha's body; the next half verse versifies the fourth, regaining memory of the Dharma; the next one verse repeatedly versifies the third, getting to see the Buddha's body; the next one verse versifies the second, dispatching real assemblies.
