Broadly speaking, both can serve as parables: the teaching of the Middle Way is perfectly upright, just like the jewel; cultivating the spirit and nourishing nature is identical in function to wine. Since the teaching comprises both, the same holds true for understanding. However, the jewel properly represents understanding—namely, the bodhicitta; hence the correspondence below says, "the vow for omniscient knowledge still remains and is not lost." The parable of wine has two meanings: first, it illustrates the teaching; second, the drinking of wine benefiting the body illustrates that receiving the teaching generates understanding. Thus we know it possesses both meanings. Yet the wine properly illustrates the teaching.
