There are four positions in all: 1. sudden and not gradual, which is expounding the Avataṃsaka teaching for the bodhisattvas upon first attaining the Way; 2. gradual and not sudden, which refers to the teachings of humans, gods, and the two vehicles; 3. both gradual and sudden, which is the teaching of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā: expounding the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā for bodhisattvas is sudden for bodhisattvas because all Mahāyāna dharmas are fully elucidated in the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā—the chapter on 'Faith and Understanding' says, 'The Buddha commanded us to speak the supreme Way; those who cultivate and practice this shall attain buddhahood,' hence it is named sudden; yet commanding small people to expound the great Dharma serves as an upāya for entering the ekayāna, hence for people of the Hīnayāna it is called gradual; 4. neither gradual nor sudden: the above three positions are all approaches of the teaching; by relying on these approaches of the teaching, one wishes to manifest the wordless Way, which cannot be spoken of in terms of gradual or sudden.
