As for generally clarifying the manifest and the secret across sūtras and treatises, broadly elucidating a single dispensation there are four gateways in all: 1. manifestly teaching bodhisattvas and not secretly transforming śrāvakas, which is the Avataṃsaka teaching. Because the great capacities were already mature, He manifestly taught them; because the small vessels were not yet capable, it was not appropriate to secretly transform them—therefore, displaying rare jewels was precisely for kin and relations, while the poor son collapsed to the ground, not yet capable of being conferred precious jewels. 2. Manifestly teaching śrāvakas and not secretly transforming bodhisattvas, which is the Tripiṭaka teaching. Luring and accommodating was precisely for the two vehicles, and furthermore other people were sent away, not secretly transforming bodhisattvas. 3. Manifestly teaching bodhisattvas and secretly transforming śrāvakas, which is the Prajñā teaching. Purifying the land and transforming people was precisely for teaching the great beings; entrusting the wealth and commanding the expounding secretly transformed those of small minds. 4. Manifestly teaching bodhisattvas and manifestly transforming śrāvakas, which is the Lotus Sūtra's teaching. The doubts of the great beings having been removed, He manifestly taught bodhisattvas; the arhats becoming buddhas, He manifestly transformed śrāvakas. These four gateways are precisely the sequence: three propositions are subsumed under the Bodhisattvapiṭaka; manifestly teaching śrāvakas and not secretly transforming bodhisattvas is subsumed under the Tripiṭaka teaching. Yet while the Avataṃsaka, the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā, and the Tripiṭaka, in clarifying their meaning according to their respective teachings, each have only a single track, the Lotus Sūtra concludes and unites beginning and end, thereby fully possessing all four gateways.
