Tenth, wishing to distinguish as they truly are the retributions of sin and merit for sentient beings of the present and the future in the ten directions, he therefore preached this sūtra. If with a single word one slanders the Dharma or reviles a person who upholds the sūtra, one incurs a vast retribution of sin; with a single thought of sympathetic joy, one invites boundless merit. Why is this? The discussion of sin and merit arises from running contrary to or according with principle; since this sūtra expounds the real principle, trusting it yields much merit, while slandering it incurs heavy sin. An old commentary manuscript explained the causes and conditions for expounding the sūtra very extensively; here we briefly clarify ten headings.
