Regarding explaining the title: benevolence, compassion, wisdom, and awakening are called 'bhadra' (worthy); virtues and benefits being universally complete is called 'samanta' (universal). This is because inwardly realizing the single reality and outwardly accomplishing the myriad virtues results in virtues and benefits being universally complete, and in benevolence, compassion, wisdom, and awakening; therefore he is named Samantabhadra. The Adhyardhaśatikā Prajñāpāramitā says: 'All sentient beings are the tathāgatagarbha, because Samantabhadra Bodhisattva pervades their own-nature.' Because he realizes the universally worthy and good principle, the path that can realize it is named Samantabhadra. Thus the Avataṃsaka-sūtra says: 'The bodily marks of Samantabhadra rely on thusness itself, not on a buddha-land.' Alternatively, because he inwardly realizes this universally worthy principle and outwardly manifests that not one of his three modes of action is other than worthy, he is therefore named Samantabhadra; this takes its name from the virtue of self-benefit. Enticing and praising is called 'encouragement' (quan); guiding and generating is called 'arousal' (fa). Instructing, enticing, praising, and guiding to make them believe and arouse [the mind] is called 'encouragement and arousal' (encouragement); this is the virtue of benefiting others. In this chapter, it explains Samantabhadra Bodhisattva encouraging the arousal of faith to uphold the sūtra and enter the Path; therefore it is named the 'Chapter on the Encouragement of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.'
