Eulogy: This one verse praises vigor. This encompasses both armor-like vigor and the vigor that gathers wholesome qualities, while omitting the vigor that benefits and gladdens sentient beings. Vigor has five aspects: armor-like, application, non-inferiority, non-regression, and non-contentment; these correspond to what the sūtras describe as having power, having diligence, having courage, being firm and fierce, and not abandoning the yoke of goodness. First, generating intense and keen aspiration is called "armor-like"; next, arousing firm and brave expedient means is called "application"; next, for the sake of realization, neither despising oneself nor having timidity or dread is called "non-inferiority"; next, being able to endure sufferings such as cold and heat, and not giving rise to satisfaction with inferior goodness, is called "non-regression"; next, being able to enter the realization of the truths and seeking ever more superior classes of merits is called "non-contentment." Because the ultimate path of the two vehicles aspires to great bodhi, and the ultimate path of the buddhas delights in benefiting and bringing joy to others, the first one is called "armor-like" and the latter four are called "gathering wholesome qualities"; here they are collectively called "brave and fierce vigor."
