The Commentary states: This matches them with the sūtras. The Prakaraṇāryavācā has only the five names from the sūtras, while the Abhidharma-samuccaya has both sets of names. Fascicle eighty-nine says: Initially generating intense aspiration and desire is called 'armored' [diligence]. The sūtras call it 'having power': like donning armor and entering the battlefield, one has nothing to fear and possesses great majesty and power. Next, generating firm and resolute skillful means is called 'preparatory' [diligence]. The sūtras call it 'having zeal': one firms one's mind and urges oneself to toil. Next, for the sake of realization, neither despising oneself nor having timidity or dread is called 'unsubdued' [diligence]. The sūtras call it 'having valor': not debasing oneself, one further increases one's valiant sharpness. Next, being able to endure the sufferings of cold, heat, and so forth, not generating contentment or satiety with inferior wholesome qualities, and joyfully seeking subsequent superior qualities of merit and so forth is called 'without regress' [diligence]. The sūtras call it 'firm and valiant': facing suffering without yielding, making one's will firm and valiant. Next, gradually entering the contemplation of the truths and subsequent, ever-higher noble paths is called 'without complacency' [diligence]. The sūtras call it 'not casting off the wholesome yoke.' A yoke is the yoke of a cart: using a yoke on oxen prevents the oxen from straying and enables them to travel; wholesome dharmas are also like this, yoking the practitioner so that he does not stray from wholesome factors, travelling to the palace of nirvāṇa, cultivating without ever being satisfied; it is named by way of metaphor. Below, the differences in stages are revealed.
