應頌有二相：一為益後來，二顯前未了義。《對法》等云「謂諸經中或中或後以頌重頌前長行義，名益後來」。又云「不了義經應更頌釋，長行雖說，義未了故，名顯前未了義」。《涅槃》唯說初之一義。

Geyas have two characteristics: first, to benefit those who come later; second, to reveal meanings that were not yet clarified earlier. The *Abhidharmasamuccaya* and other texts say: 'It refers to repeating in verse the meaning of the preceding prose, either in the middle or at the end of various sūtras, which is called benefiting those who come later.' It also says: 'Sūtras of unclarified meaning should be further versified and explained; although the prose has spoken, because the meaning is not yet clear, it is called revealing meanings not yet clarified earlier.' The *Nirvāṇa-sūtra* speaks only of the first single meaning.
