Vyākaraṇas have three characteristics: first, prophesying the causes and fruits of disciples' deaths and births; second, clearly explaining the profound and esoteric meaning; third, prophesying the bodhisattvas' future attainment of buddhahood. The *Abhidharmasamuccaya* and other texts say: 'It refers to places where holy disciples and others pass away, prophesying the distinctions of their virtues, faults, and places of rebirth'—this is prophesying the causes and fruits of disciples' deaths and births. It also says: 'Furthermore, sūtras of explicit meaning are called vyākaraṇa, because vyākaraṇa reveals and shows the profound and esoteric meaning'—this is the second, prophesying the profound and esoteric meaning. Therefore this root treatise says: 'There are four kinds of prophecies: namely, prophecy of the determined mind, of causes, of receiving, and of granting, etc.' The *Nirvāṇa-sūtra* says: 'The Tathāgata granted prophecy to the great persons: "You, Ajita! In the future there will be a king named Śaṅkha; during that world you will attain buddhahood and be named Maitreya"—this is the vyākaraṇa scripture'—this is the third, prophesying the future attainment of buddhahood.
