Furthermore, looking at the cold hells in succession relative to the eight great burning hells, their lifespans are nearly half. In the secondary and solitary hells, lifespans are indeterminate. The above explains the lifespans of the five destinies as fruits of desire. The lifespan of the devas of the Retinue of Brahmā is twenty intermediate kalpas [per] one [great] kalpa; the devas of the Ministers of Brahmā have a lifespan of forty intermediate kalpas [per] one kalpa; the devas of the Great Brahmā have a lifespan of sixty intermediate kalpas [per] one kalpa; the devas of Lesser Light have a lifespan of eighty intermediate kalpas [per] two kalpas. In comparison, the lifespans of the heavens above these progressively double, except for the Cloudless [Heaven], where it should be known that the lifespan is reduced by three kalpas. The Base of Boundless Space has a lifespan of twenty thousand kalpas; the Base of Boundless Consciousness has a lifespan of forty thousand kalpas; the Base of Nothingness has a lifespan of sixty thousand kalpas; and the Base of Neither-Conception-nor-Non-conception has a lifespan of eighty thousand kalpas. In what has been stated above, except for Uttarakuru, all other places have untimely death. Although for all apparitional births their bodies leave no corrupt residue at death, currently humans, ghosts, and animals all possess bodies with residue; devas and [beings in] the hells perish along with their consciousness without bodily residue. However, when the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna[-sūtra] and others speak of one hundred and thirty-six hells, each of the eight great hells has sixteen secondary enclosures and outlook towers on its four gates, totaling one hundred and twenty-eight places, which combined with the eight fundamental hells make one hundred and thirty-six; this does not count the eight cold hells or solitary hells—if these were counted, the hells would be very numerous. The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: "Thirty-two thousand [yojanas] beneath this is Sañjīva," from which it is clear that the hells lie beneath this continent. The Hīnayāna traditions differ; according to the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra, the great hells lie beneath Mount Sumeru. The above explains lifespan.
