Regarding bodily size: humans of Jambudvīpa have indeterminate bodily sizes, sometimes tall and large, sometimes short and small, but always measuring three and a half cubits according to their own cubit. Humans of the other three continents likewise measure three and a half cubits according to their own cubits, their bodies being somewhat taller. The bodily size of the devas of the Four Heavenly Kings is one-quarter of a krośa. The bodily size of the Trāyastriṃśa devas increases by one foot—one foot means that when one krośa is divided into four parts, half of one part is called one foot. The bodily size of Śakra is half a krośa, and the bodily size of the Yāma devas is likewise half a krośa. Above this, the bodily size of the desire-realm devas should be known to progressively increase by one foot for each. [In the Form Realm,] the Retinue of Brahmā is half a yojana, the Ministers of Brahmā is one yojana, the Great Brahmā is one and a half yojanas, and Lesser Light is two yojanas. The heavens above these progressively double, except for the Cloudless [Heaven], where it should be known to decrease by three yojanas. The Formless Realm has no form, so bodily size is not spoken of. Yet the treatise also says: "Devas of the Form and Formless Realms manifest hundreds of thousands of kotis of bodies, standing together within the realm of space the size of a hair's tip." The Humane Kings Sūtra lists the assemblies of the Formless Realm. The Āgamas state that the devas of the Formless Realm shed tears like fine spring rain, standing beside the Buddha—these are all apparitionally created, [taking] size according to the occasion, and are not bodies resulting from karmic fruitions. Within the great hells, bodily sizes are indeterminate: if one has committed and reinforced extremely grave unwholesome karma, one receives a vast body; otherwise, it is not so. The cold hells, solitary hells, secondary hells, animals, and hungry ghosts are also like this. Asuras have bodily sizes like those of the Trāyastriṃśa [heavens]—this speaks of fundamental asuras; if they are in this continent, their bodies are smaller and indeterminate. This briefly distinguishes the destinies based on the essential points; all other details should be understood in accordance with the principles.
