In explaining the text of the sūtra: in Sanskrit it is called Avīci, which here is translated as "Unremitting." The Yogācārabhūmi says: "Because their experiencing of suffering is without interval, and the fire is without interval, due to slandering the sūtra. They fully endure one kalpa, which is one intermediate kalpa. When life reaches its end at the exhaustion of this kalpa, they are reborn again. In this manner they cycle on for countless kalpas." The Prajñāpāramitā-sūtras say that because of slandering the Mahāyāna, when the hells of this region are exhausted, they are born in the east; cycling through the hells of the ten directions in this way, when the hells of the ten directions are exhausted, they are reborn back here. Therefore, this says that in this manner they cycle on for countless kalpas; they do not only fall into the Avīci hell, but also fall into other places, for here one grave place is singled out. Although this is one karma, named from its initial reception, it is only called immediate retribution upon rebirth. The heinous offenses common to the Three Vehicles are: killing one's father, harming one's mother, killing an arhat, shedding the blood of a Buddha, and breaking the harmony of the Saṅgha. The Satyakanirgrantha-sūtra speaks of five heinous offenses of the Mahāyāna: first, destroying stūpas, demolishing monasteries, burning sūtras and images, and stealing the property of the Three Jewels; second, slandering the teachings of the Three Vehicles, claiming they are not noble dharmas, obstructing, hindering, suppressing, and concealing them; third, toward all renunciants—whether possessing precepts or without precepts, whether keeping precepts or breaking precepts—beating, reviling, scolding them, exposing their faults, confining them to prison, or stripping them of their kāṣāyas to force them to return to lay life, imposing servitude upon them to extract taxes, or ending their life-faculties; fourth, killing one's father, harming one's mother, shedding the blood of a Buddha, killing an arhat, and breaking the harmony of the Saṅgha; fifth, giving rise to great wrong views and slandering [the truth of] cause and effect. Because through the long night they constantly practiced the ten unwholesome karmas, now having disbelieved this sūtra, after entering the Avīci hell they cycle in this manner for countless [kalpas]. The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra states: "Among the five heinous offenses, breaking the Saṅgha is the gravest, definitively incurring one kalpa of suffering in Avīci." Now [this retribution] surpasses even that, hence it says that upon the exhaustion of the kalpa they are reborn again, and so forth.
