The Commentary says: The second is praising the superior virtues developed through causes. As for 'sitting for ten minor kalpas', the *Avataṃsaka-sūtra* explains ten kinds of sitting: first, the sitting of a wheel-turning king, because he imparts the ten good deeds; second, the sitting of the Four Heavenly Kings, because they wish to act with sovereignty regarding the true Dharma of all buddhas in all worlds; third, the sitting of Śakra, because he acts with sovereignty regarding all sentient beings; fourth, the sitting of the Brahmā kings, because they attain sovereignty over their own minds and others' minds; fifth, the lion's sitting, because of analyzing and explaining profound meanings; sixth, the sitting of the true Dharma, because of wishing to clarify dhāraṇīs, the powers, and eloquence; seventh, the sitting of steadfast samādhi, because of reaching ultimate great bodhi; eighth, the sitting of great benevolence, because of causing those with evil minds to all rejoice; ninth, the sitting of great compassion, because of being able to endure all afflictions and suffering; tenth, the adamantine sitting, because of subduing all Māras and heterodox teachers. Here, this is precisely the steadfast samādhi and the adamantine sitting. 'Tranquil' refers to samādhi of the body. 'Mind serene' refers to samādhi of the mind. *Dan* (憺) is pronounced *tu* + *lam*; the *Shuowen* says: 'It means peaceful and tranquil, as in tranquil and at ease.' The *Qieyun* says: 'For tranquil, it should be written 憺; for flavorless, it is written 淡; for calm and quiet, it is written 惔憺.' The *Yupian* says: '憺 is pronounced *tu* + *gam*, meaning tranquil and peaceful.' Some write it as 惔, which the *Shuowen* pronounces *tu* + *kam*, meaning anxiety, but that is not the meaning here. The character dictionaries write it as 倓, also pronounced *tu* + *lam*. *Po* (怕) is pronounced *p'ik* + *b'ak*, also meaning tranquil. The *Yupian* says: 'Non-action.' *Danpo* (憺怕) therefore means peaceful and quiet. Some write it as 淡泊, meaning flavorless, which is not the meaning here.
