憺怕（上徒濫反說文憺安也靜也謂憺然安樂玉篇憺徒敢反恬靖也亦安也有作恬恬靖有作惔說文徒甘反憂也非此中義字書作倓亦徒濫反怕說文匹白反無為也廣雅憺怕安靜也子虛賦云怕𠔃無欲憺乎自持是也）。

憺怕 (First character: fanqie [d- + l- = dàn]; the Shuowen says: "憺 means peaceful and quiet; it refers to being tranquil, peaceful, and joyful"; the Yupian says: "憺, fanqie [d- + g- = dǎn], meaning calm, quiet, and tranquil"; some texts have 恬 [tián], meaning calm and peaceful; some write 惔, which the Shuowen gives as fanqie [d- + g- = tán], meaning anxiety, which is not the sense here; dictionaries write 倓, also fanqie [d- + l- = dàn]; 怕, Shuowen fanqie [p- + b- = pà], meaning non-action; the Guangya says: "憺怕 means peaceful and quiet"; the 'Rhapsody on Sir Vacuous' (Zixu fu) says: "Tranquil (怕) and free of desire, calm (憺) and self-possessed," which is this).
