Regarding explaining the names: "Four" is the number; "truth" is the meaning of real. Because only the nobles know the real, they are called the four noble truths. Suffering is truly suffering, without any other suffering, and so on. Fascicle 55 [of the Yogācārabhūmi] says: "What is the meaning of truth? It is the meaning of not departing from the characteristics as taught. The meaning of reaching the culmination of purification by contemplating this is the meaning of truth." This is an explanation that includes a numeral (karmadhāraya with number). / "Suffering" means oppression, that which is produced by afflictions. "Origin" means bringing about, capable of producing the truth of suffering. "Cessation" means quiescence, the meaning of quiescence together with that. "Path" means the cause of passage, capable of bringing about the three meanings. The "three meanings" are here the fact of suffering, the principle of suffering, and the tathatā of suffering; up to the truth of the path having three is also like this. The fact of suffering called truth is a karmadhāraya compound; the other two called truth are tatpuruṣa compounds. Although the two, principle and tathatā, are neither one with nor different from the fact of suffering, nevertheless neither of them is oppressive, and so forth.
