解妨者，問：何故為中根記合為一品，為下根記分二品耶？答：高名之記：一異、二同。滿慈、陳如二類別故。非高名輩，一同、二異。二千、阿難等，兩類別故。由此兩類，分成二品；中性不然。高名之中滿慈為化，下名之輩阿難為化故也。

Resolving difficulties: Question: Why was the prophecy for those of intermediate capacity combined into one chapter, while the prophecies for those of lesser capacity were divided into two chapters? Answer: The prophecies for those of high renown were: first, distinct; second, collective, because Pūrṇa and Kauṇḍinya represent two distinct types. Those not of high renown were: first, collective; second, distinct, because the two thousand and Ānanda and others represent two distinct types. Due to these two categories, they were divided into two chapters; for intermediate nature it was not so. Among those of high renown, Pūrṇa served to transform [others], and among those of lower renown, Ānanda served to transform [others]; hence it is so.
