First, as for the essence that comprehensively encompasses: all uncontaminated [dharmas]—whether seeds or actual manifestations, conditioned or unconditioned, whether cause or fruit, fundamental or expedient means—that can accomplish the virtues of buddhahood are all called the Single Vehicle. The Single Vehicle is the Great Vehicle, and the Great Vehicle is the Unsurpassable Vehicle; hence the Śrīmālā says: 'The Single Vehicle is the Great Vehicle.' This root treatise states: 'Opening is the meaning of unsurpassable.' The chapter on the Unsurpassable Vehicle in the Madhyāntavibhāga-śāstra has three unsurpassables: first, unsurpassability of correct practice, referring to the ten perfections, which according to the distinctions of cultivation have six correct practices; second, unsurpassability of the objective referent, having twelve kinds of objective referents; third, unsurpassability of cultivation and realization, referring to the ten kinds of cultivation and realization such as lineage cultivation and realization, which comprehensively encompasses all domains, practices, and fruitions of all bodhisattvas. Therefore the Śrīmālā further states: 'Arhats and pratyekabuddhas have fear, have refuge, and their four wisdoms are not ultimate; they are called turning toward the realm of nirvāṇa.' It also states: 'The abiding of the true Dharma, the cessation of the true Dharma, the prātimokṣa, the vinaya, going forth, and receiving full ordination—these six dharmas are taught for the sake of the Great Vehicle.' Therefore we know that all fundamental and expedient means, all uncontaminated [dharmas] whether seeds or actual manifestations, conditioned or unconditioned, whether cause or fruit, that can accomplish the virtues of buddhahood are all named the Single Vehicle, because the three kinds of mind-made bodies all enter the first stage.
