In the fulfilment of the time for expounding the Dharma, some explain that "Mahāyāna sūtra" is the general name, while "immeasurable meanings" downward are the specific names, yet these specific names not only explain the Immeasurable Meanings, but also apply universally to all Mahāyāna sūtras. This meaning is unacceptable. To explain them as general and specific may indeed be theoretically reasonable, since "Mahāyāna sūtra" is the general name for all Mahāyāna sūtras—this is thoroughly established—and "immeasurable" downward are the specific names. However, to say they also apply universally to all Mahāyāna [sūtras] is unacceptable. When the treatise explains the fulfilment of the time, it cites the preaching of the Immeasurable Meanings; if it applied universally to all, why would it be called the fulfilment of the time? Or, having expounded other sūtras, he had not yet expounded this Lotus Sūtra. By this, one knows that the seventeen names explain only the one Immeasurable Meanings. Furthermore, the treatise states: "This sūtra has seventeen names." If they applied universally to all, why would it be necessary to state this? Moreover, they themselves explain: "The teaching and meaning of the single text expounded at this time receives only three names, just as the Avataṃsaka and others are merely called Vaipulya." And further: "Because the meanings expressed by the remaining fourteen names are not complete in the Immeasurable Meanings Sūtra, the Immeasurable Meanings does not receive the other names, but receives only three names." How then could one say that the seventeen names apply universally to all Mahāyāna sūtras? Furthermore, the treatise states: "This Mahāyāna sūtra has seventeen names." If the names of the Immeasurable Meanings were not complete, how could it say that this [sūtra] has seventeen names?
