1.56

昔說五乘，為顯教五，稟教之徒聞昔五乘作五異解墮在諸邊，稟人天教者在生死邊，求二乘者墮涅槃邊，學大乘者著大乘邊，今破此諸邊令心無著。

In the past, the five vehicles were taught to reveal five teachings. Hearing the past five vehicles, the followers who received the teachings formed five different understandings and fell into various extremes: those who received the human and celestial teachings remained on the extreme of saṃsāra; those seeking the two vehicles fell into the extreme of nirvāṇa; those studying the Mahāyāna clung to the extreme of the Mahāyāna. Now, he refutes these various extremes to make their minds free of attachment.
