九為增念佛三昧，故說此經。自昔未明真實身、方便身故，凡夫二乘、始行菩薩未識佛，故不解禮念，但有所得心禮念，即禮念有所得心，何曾禮念於佛？故佛非彼師，彼非佛子。今開身方便、身真實，方解禮念。

Ninth, this sūtra was spoken to augment the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha. In the past, the real body and expedient body had not yet been clarified; therefore ordinary beings, [practitioners of] the two vehicles, and newly initiated bodhisattvas did not know the Buddha, and thus did not understand how to pay homage and be mindful [of him]. When they paid homage and were mindful only with a mind of grasping, they were simply paying homage and being mindful of a mind of grasping—how could they ever have paid homage and been mindful of the Buddha? Hence the Buddha was not their master, and they were not the Buddha's sons. Now, by revealing the expedient body and the real body, they finally understand how to pay homage and be mindful.
