However, previously it was clarified that person and dharma differ between ordinary beings and sages; now in distinguishing benevolence and compassion, the great and the small are likewise different. If a practitioner of the Tripiṭaka contemplates the eight sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death in fragmentary [samsāra], he immediately raises the vow: 'Sentient beings are boundless, I vow to deliver them.' If he contemplates the inverted fettering karma of fragmentary [samsāra], he raises the vow: 'Afflictions are measureless, I vow to sever them.' Wishing to cause sentient beings to contemplate these causes and effects as impermanent, arising and ceasing, and flowing from thought to thought, and to cultivate the aids to the path, he immediately raises the vow: 'Dharma gates are measureless, I vow to know them.' If he contemplates the unconditioned principle of the truth of emptiness, he raises the vow: 'The unsurpassed Buddha path, I vow to achieve it.' Such benevolence and compassion arise in connection with the constructed four truths.
