Furthermore, the Shared teaching contemplates the eight sufferings of old age and death as like an illusion and like a transformation; seeing that sentient beings are inverted and consider them real, one immediately raises the vows. Greed, anger, delusion, and so forth are like an illusion and like a transformation; seeing that sentient beings are inverted and suffer distress because of them, one immediately raises the vows. Contemplating that form itself is empty, consciousness itself is empty, and greed, delusion, and so forth are themselves empty—that it is not through the destruction of form that there is emptiness, but the nature of form is empty of itself, and emptiness also cannot be obtained—yet sentient beings cannot realize that form itself is empty, one immediately raises the vows. Furthermore, contemplating nirvāṇa, [one knows that] even if there were any dharma surpassing nirvāṇa, I would also say it is like an illusion and like a transformation; yet sentient beings consider that there is a Buddha path to be sought, and so one immediately raises the vows. This is giving rise to the vows of benevolence and compassion in connection with the unproduced four truths.
