2.40

問：機為是善？為不善？若已是善，何須感聖？若未是善，那得言善之將生？答：性善冥伏如蓮華在泥，聖人若應如日照則出。

Question: Is capacity good, or is it unwholesome? If it is already good, why is there a need to stimulate the sage? If it is not yet good, how can it be said that goodness is about to arise? Answer: The inherent goodness is covertly latent, like a lotus flower in the mud; if the sage responds, it emerges like the sun shining on it.
