Next, regarding the contemplative explanation: it clarifies not only the wind in the world, for black karma is named wind. The Huayan jing states: 'The fierce wind of resentment and hatred blows the fire of the sinful mind, keeping it constantly ablaze; it blows all merchant-practitioners, causing them to fall into evil destinies, losing the good treasures of human destiny and the non-outflow noble wealth.' From the hells up to the third dhyāna, there are all perils of retribution-wind. For example, the Saṅgharakṣita Sūtra clarifies the various appearances of hell, where violent winds and fierce waves submerge and destroy them, and hungry ghosts devour them; if in the ghost destiny, cold winds split bones and bodies shatter into fragments; as for the flying and walking creatures among animals, nests are toppled and eggs overturned—how could one recount it all? Asuras also have wind disasters: when the wind disaster arises, the mountains crash into one another, and palaces up to the third dhyāna are crushed into fine dust. At such a time, who can rescue them? One should solely invoke Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva with a single mind; through the power of the king of samādhis, whether blocking with a hand or inhaling with the mouth, through immeasurable expedient means he causes them to attain liberation. Next, it clarifies that if one cultivates good deeds, the wind of evil karma blows, wrecking the ship of the five precepts and ten virtues, plunging them into the demon countries of the three miserable paths and into the realm of views and desire. The Da jing states: 'A rākṣasa woman devours all the children she gives birth to; having devoured all the children, she further devours her husband. One must urgently invoke Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, who through compassionate power is able to cause liberation.'
