Swords and staves are material resistance, subsumed under the syllable-gate of earth; the bodhisattva thoroughly and clearly understands the earth-gate of material resistance. As the forty[-fascicle] Huayan explains: 'The maiden Mitrā, in the palace of King Siṃhadhvaja in the city of Siṃhavikrīḍita, dwelt in a radiant, pure jewel-treasury dharma hall. This hall was adorned inconceivably: within each single lapis lazuli pillar, each single adamantine wall, each single maṇi mirror, various gems, various bells, various trees, various images, and various necklaces—abiding inside all these objects of material resistance, one completely sees all Tathāgatas from their first arousal of the aspiration, practicing the bodhisattva path, up to realizing equal and perfect awakening and entering extinction, all appearing within them, none not clearly distinct, like the image of the moon seen in clear water. This dharma gate is called the Prajñā Universal Adornment dharma gate. When Sudhana entered this earth dharma gate, he was able to attain ineffable dhāraṇīs, the great kindness and great compassion dhāraṇī, the dhāraṇī able to perform Buddha-work, with all dharmas fully complete.' One should know that the syllable-gate of earth universally responds to all, causing them to attain liberation.
