The three wisdoms are truly attained within a single mind; they cannot be said to be one or different. As for the "contemplation of compassion" and so forth, they are general designations for the vows, because contemplation arises conditioned on the truths. Just as in Great Calming and Contemplation, the ten dharmas are all generally called contemplation. The next verse discerns the benefits, again in two parts: the upper two lines explain the light of wisdom, and the next two lines the light of compassion, destroying darkness and illuminating the world, and so forth. Third, the one verse concludes with the overt response of the holy one's three karmas. The thunder of precepts corresponds to physical karma; the cloud of compassion corresponds to mental karma; the pouring rain corresponds to verbal karma. Precepts regulate the seven branches [of action], so physical karma is appropriate. Purity of precepts can eradicate the suffering of the three evil paths; hence it is called the substance of compassion. The physical wheel displaying spiritual powers startles the minds of the multitude, which is again like a thunderclap. Loving mindfulness in the inner mind is called compassion, which blankets everything like a cloud. Responding without premeditation, meeting capacities without error, is again called wondrous mental karma. The verbal wheel expounds the Dharma of the true aspect, serving as ambrosia rain; the three herbs and two trees are equally moistened, and the feverish distress of the three delusions becomes cool. Detailed explanations of the three unconditioned states, the three non-guardings, and so on, are as in the earlier text. Every responsive trace and every preaching of Dharma must elucidate the dharmamukhas in which the bodhisattvas of the separate and perfect teachings abide; only then do they possess practical efficacy. The single turn explaining the Universal Gate is concluded.
