The commentary says: What follows is the second part, which extensively reveals the expedients, having three questions and answers. In this first exchange, the numbers are cited to provide a general designation. "Guarding the one mind's thusness": within the dharma of the one mind there are two gates; here one first guards its gate of the mind as true thusness, in order to subdue the force of the great dragon of ignorance, because ignorance directly deludes the thusness of the one mind. Here, "guarding" means that upon entering, one quietly guards the realm of the one thusness, and upon emerging, one does not lose the mind of the single taste; therefore it is said to "guard the one." As stated in the Ten Practices in the Benye jing: "The tenth is for turning the great wheel of Dharma with mastery; that is, the bodhisattva's Three Jewels. At that time, the bodhisattva takes the cognition of the supreme Middle Way as the Buddha Jewel; all dharmas being unborn, their movement and giving are the Dharma Jewel; constantly practicing in the six destinies and harmonizing with the sentient beings of the six destinies is called the Saṅgha Jewel, because they turn all sentient beings so that they flow into the ocean of the Buddha." Note: Not losing the single taste of the Middle Way at the three times is precisely the function of guarding the one in this contemplation. This contemplation belongs to the rank of the Ten Practices. The other gate will be revealed later and is not discussed here.
