The commentary states: Below, this is the second, that the two vehicles do not see it. Within this, there are two: first, the question; second, the answer. In the question, 'that single ground' refers to the ground ascended to; among the ten grounds, the first ground is called the single ground. The 'ocean of emptiness' refers to the emptiness entered by the preceding three contemplations; because it is extremely profound and vast, it is called an ocean. In the answer, 'it is so' grants that they do not see it. Below, it explains the reason why the two vehicles do not see it. 'Crave and are attached to samādhi' means that they delight in and are attached to tranquil absorption, thus inclining toward quiescence. 'Attaining a body of samādhi' means that, in accordance with their inclination, they enter the absorption of cessation of mind, and by entering nirvāṇa they reduce the body to ashes and extinguish cognition; at the place where the cognitive mind is extinguished, the substance of the absorption of cessation arises to obstruct the mind and mental factors—this is called 'attaining a body of samādhi.' The habituation of delighting in quiescence is within the fundamental consciousness, and because of this, they do not awaken to the ocean of emptiness and the single ground. 'As though they have contracted the sickness of alcohol, stupified and drunk without waking up, even for many kalpas still unable to awaken': stream-entrants abide for eighty thousand kalpas, up to arhats who abide for twenty thousand kalpas, and pratyekabuddhas who abide for ten thousand kalpas; they abide in nirvāṇa without awakening. Here it speaks in general terms, saying 'even for many kalpas.' 'Only when the alcohol wears off do they first awaken, only then cultivating this practice': in accordance with whether their habituation of craving and attachment is thick or thin, when the alcoholic influence diminishes, their mind can arise again. When the mind arises, they turn their mind toward the Great [Vehicle], and only then cultivate the three kinds of contemplative practice as described above. As the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra verse says: 'Just like a stupified, drunken person / who only awakens after the alcohol wears off, / they attain the unsurpassed body of the Buddha, / which is my true Dharma body,' and so on at length.
