The sūtra states: Mahābalavān Bodhisattva said, "Such a person should not uphold the precepts, and should not revere those śramaṇas." The Buddha said, "Precepts are spoken for those who are unwholesome and arrogant, and because of the billows of the ocean. In the ground of that person's mind, the ocean of the eight consciousnesses is settled and clear, the flow of the ninth consciousness is pure, the wind cannot stir it, and billows do not arise. The nature of the precepts is equal to emptiness; those who cling to upholding them are deluded and inverted. As for that person, the seventh and sixth [consciousnesses] do not arise, and the collection [of mind and mental factors] is extinguished in absorption; not parting from the three Buddhas, they arouse bodhi; in the three signless states, they mysteriously enter in accord with the mind, deeply revering the Three Jewels and not losing their deportment. Toward those śramaṇas, they are not without reverence. Bodhisattva, that benevolent one does not dwell in the worldly moving and unmoving dharmas; entering the accumulation of the three emptinesses, they extinguish the mind of the three existences."
