The commentary says: This answers and directly elaborates the meaning of the original benefit. Within it there are two [parts]: first, the statement; second, the explanation.
'All Buddhas, Tathāgatas, constantly use the single awakening' states the origin of that which can transform.
'To transform the various consciousnesses so that they enter the amala' states the transformation of that which is transformed.
Within the explanation there are two: the direct explanation and the further explanation.
Within the direct explanation, 'the innate awakening of all sentient beings' explains the previous origin of that which can transform, the 'single awakening.' All sentient beings share the same innate awakening; hence it is called 'single awakening.' All Buddhas embody this and are thus able to universally transform [beings]; hence it says 'constantly use.' Because they use this innate awakening to cause others to awaken, it says 'constantly uses the single awakening to awaken all sentient beings.'
'Causing those sentient beings to all attain innate awakening' explains the line about the transformed beings entering. Innate awakening is precisely the amala consciousness. Attaining innate awakening explains the meaning of 'entering.' When one enters innate awakening, one awakens to the fact that the eight consciousnesses are originally tranquil and extinguished. Because the awakening is ultimate, the consciousnesses do not arise; hence it says 'the various consciousnesses are tranquil, extinguished, and unarisen.' This line directly explains the line 'to transform the various consciousnesses.' This passage fully reveals both innate awakening and initial awakening: 'the innate awakening of all sentient beings, etc.' is the meaning of innate awakening, while 'awakening to the fact that all conscious minds are tranquil, extinguished, and unarisen' is the meaning of initial awakening. This shows that initial awakening is identical to innate awakening.
From 'Why is this?' onwards is the second further explanation, which explains what the aforementioned initial awakening awakens to: tranquility and extinction. Although the eight consciousnesses stir and transform in accordance with conditions, when seeking a determinate nature, none can be found; hence it says, 'the determinate fundamental nature is originally without any movement.' Because it is originally unmoving, it is originally tranquil and extinguished.
