The treatise states: From here downward is the second [major section], dispatching attachments. Herein there are two parts: first, clarifying non-abiding so as to dispatch the attachment to abiding; second, showing non-attainment so as to eliminate the grasping at attainment. In the first part there are two: first, the question; second, the reply. In the question, saying “solitary” means that when the eight consciousnesses are transformed, they form a single awakening. Saying “without companion” means that the two graspings at self and dharmas are both far removed. The awakening without companion permanently abides in nirvāṇa, and permanently abiding cognition is liberated from all fetters. Having formed such an attachment, he therefore raises this question.
