The sūtra states: The Buddha said, “Permanently abiding in nirvāṇa is the bondage of nirvāṇa. Why is this? Nirvāṇa is the benefit of innate awakening; the root of benefit is nirvāṇa. The awakening-component of nirvāṇa is itself the component of innate awakening. The nature of awakening being non-different, nirvāṇa is non-different; awakening being originally unborn, nirvāṇa is unborn; awakening being originally unceasing, nirvāṇa is unceasing. Because nirvāṇa is the origin, there is no attaining nirvāṇa. If nirvāṇa is without attainment, how could there be abiding? Good son, the awakened one does not abide in nirvāṇa. Why is this? Awakening is originally unborn, far removed from the defilement of sentient beings; awakening is originally without tranquility, far removed from the stirring of nirvāṇa. Abiding on such a ground, the mind has nowhere to abide; there is no exiting or entering: one enters amala.”
