論曰：此中決前諸品中疑，總持要義而不忘失，故從所為名曰〈總持〉。又地藏菩薩已得文義陀羅尼故，總持諸品所有文義，及憶大眾起疑之處，次第發問善決諸疑，故從能問名曰〈總持〉。

The treatise states: Here, doubts concerning the preceding chapters are resolved, and the essential meanings are retained without being lost; hence it is named 'Dhāraṇī' after its function. Furthermore, because Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha has already attained the dhāraṇī of words and meanings, he retains all the words and meanings of the various chapters, and recalling where doubts arose in the great assembly, sequentially raises questions and skillfully resolves all doubts; hence it is named 'Dhāraṇī' after the questioner.
