The treatise says: This is the second part, the extensive elaboration. Herein there are two parts: first, clarifying the superior benefit of the three paths of liberation; second, revealing the superior benefit of diligently cultivating the three transformations. In the first part, the statement "are of one essence and without nature" contrasts with the three gates of liberation of the Lesser Vehicle which have distinct essences and have intrinsic nature, thereby revealing that the contemplative practice of the bodhisattvas of the Great Vehicle is of one essence. When the contemplating mind realizes the lack of nature, three liberations are conventionally established in accordance with the meaning: with respect to the meaning of forgetting the essence and nature, the liberation of emptiness is established; through the gateway of forgetting the signs that are identical to the essence, the liberation of signlessness is established; through the gateway of forgetting the function that is identical to the essence, the liberation of unconditioned activity—also called the liberation of wishlessness—is established. In order to reveal the single non-conceptual contemplation, wherein with respect to the essence, nature, signs, and functions of all dharmas there is nothing that is not discarded and nothing that is not integrated, the three gates of liberation are established. "Because of this karmic activity, the mind is purified" means that because one forgets all essence, signs, and functions, one is able to purify the mind that exits contemplation and engages with the conventional, freeing it from all defiled attachments; the mind freed from defiled attachments can see the reward Buddha, and because of seeing the reward Buddha one is able to be born in the pure land; this is the superior benefit of the three paths of liberation. "Diligently cultivates the three transformations in this profound dharma" means diligently cultivating the threefold emptiness with respect to the dharma of emptiness. What are they? The emptiness of the sign of emptiness is the cultivation of the first transformation; the emptiness of the emptiness of emptiness is the cultivation of the second transformation; the emptiness of that which is emptied is the cultivation of the third transformation. Their meanings are as explained before, and so are not discussed separately. Diligently cultivating the three transformations directly reaches the one mind; because one reaches the one mind, discernment and concentration are fully perfected; the stage of full perfection immediately transcends the three realms; this is the superior benefit of diligently cultivating the three transformations.
