The commentary states: Below this is the second part: a concise condensation with few words for those of dull faculties. Now, concerning sharp and dull, extensive and concise, there are two approaches: In terms of probing and understanding, the sharp are concise and the dull are extensive, because the sharp hear one and understand ten, whereas the dull understand ten only after hearing ten. In terms of matching words and understanding, the sharp are extensive and the dull are concise, because the sharp hear much and understand much, whereas the dull recite little and retain the whole. The purport of the present text is based on this latter approach. Within the text there are five parts: first the question, second the answer, third the request, fourth the exposition, and fifth the great assembly's gaining benefit upon hearing the teaching. This is the first text, in which there are two parts: first apprehending what was expounded before, and then questioning what is doubted. "To settle" means to fix one's mind. With many words and extensive purport, those of dull faculties and narrow talents find it difficult to fix their minds.
