3.63

論曰：是第二答。於中有三，謂法、喻、合。初法說，言我說諸法者，謂三乘教及一乘教。為迷者故者，為未達一味者說故。方便道故者，皆入一味之方便故，入正觀時不須言教故。一切法相一實義智者，因諸教法所入之相唯一實義，正觀智故。喻中言一市者，喻一實義。開四門者，喻四種教，謂三乘教及一乘教。是四門中皆歸一市者，依四教者皆歸一實故。如彼眾庶隨意所入者，隨根淺深隨入一教故。所以一市喻一實者，為是百姓之所入故，為諸眾生之所歸故。合中言種種法者，合於四門。次言味者，謂所趣味合於一市。

The commentary says: This is the second [section], the reply. In it there are three parts, namely, doctrine, simile, and application. First, in the doctrinal statement, the words “when I speak of the various dharmas” refer to the teachings of the three vehicles and the teaching of the one vehicle. “For the sake of those who are confused” means speaking for the sake of those who have not yet penetrated the single taste. “For the sake of the path of skillful means” means that all are skillful means for entering the single taste, for upon entering right contemplation, verbal teachings are not needed. “The characteristics of all dharmas are the cognition of the one real meaning” means that the characteristics entered by means of the various teachings are solely the one real meaning, because they are the cognition of right contemplation. In the simile, the “single marketplace” is a simile for the one real meaning. “Opening four gates” is a simile for the four kinds of teachings, namely, the teachings of the three vehicles and the teaching of the one vehicle. “From within these four gates, all return to the single marketplace” means that those who rely on the four teachings all return to the one reality. “Just as the multitude enters as they wish” means that according to whether their faculties are shallow or deep, they enter one teaching accordingly. The reason why a single marketplace is a simile for the one reality is that it is the place into which the common people enter, and it is that to which all sentient beings return. In the application, the words “various dharmas” correspond to the four gates. Next, the word “tastes” refers to the tastes aimed for, corresponding to the single marketplace.
