The treatise states: This is the fourth, cross-examining regarding having attainment. A question asks: The bodhisattva has not yet attained anuttarā-bodhi; why does the Tathāgata ask, 'Do you attain it?' An explanation says: Although he has not yet attained ultimate bodhi, he has already realized and attained the bodhi of the first ground. As the Fahua lun says: 'Attaining anuttarā samyaksambodhi in eight births or even one birth refers to realizing the bodhi of the first ground. Because one is free from the saṃsāra of segmented death within the three realms and can partially see the Buddha-nature of thusness, it is called attaining bodhi; it does not mean ultimately fulfilling the Tathāgata's expedient nirvāṇa.' It is noted: It is in reference to the Buddha-nature of thusness that it is called bodhi; because one can realize and see it, it is called attaining bodhi. As a sūtra says, 'The empty nature of all dharmas is precisely bodhi'—this is what it means.
