Second, essential nature: The first fruit takes the wisdom associated with faith, compassion, and vows as its nature, since with faith one initiates offerings, with compassion one transforms beings, and with dedicating merits one makes vows; that is, the post-attainment of the first bhūmi associated with these three practices eliminates those gross heavinesses and is called pliancy. The second takes the three dharmas of desire, diligence, and wisdom as its nature; that is, in the path of superior progress, seeking teachers and pursuing the Dharma diligently without weariness, with correct wisdom clearly understanding, is called setting forth. The third takes the retributive five skandhas as its nature. The fourth, as its name suggests, takes vows and wisdom as its nature. Furthermore, the first is practice, the second is understanding, the third is the retribution essence, and the fourth is karmic function.
