15.44

二來意者，有二：一遠意，為答普光十頂問故。以十重相望各為終極，得名頂故，知安樂界為娑婆頂等。古釋：將答佛壽命問。此名字雖亦相當，文勢不順。謂此壽命問在十地等前，不合答在此處。十頂問在地後，更無別答之文，故知屬此。二近意，前〈僧祇品〉顯佛菩薩實德平等超過數量；此品別辨佛德，就機示有脩短；後〈住處品〉別辨菩薩法用，約機明住處差別。

Second, the purpose of inclusion has two aspects: First, the distant purpose: to answer the question of the ten summits of Universal Light. Because the ten levels relative to one another are each an ultimate culmination and receive the name 'summit', we know that the Sukhāvatī realm is the summit of the Sahā world, and so on. An ancient commentary states: 'It is about to answer the question on the Buddha's lifespan.' Although this name corresponds, the flow of the text is not consistent: that is, this question on lifespan precedes the ten bhūmis and should not be answered here. The question on the ten summits follows the bhūmis and has no other separate text answering it, so we know it belongs here. Second, the immediate purpose: the previous 'Chapter on Asaṃkhyeya' revealed that the real virtues of buddhas and bodhisattvas are equal and transcend numbers; this chapter separately distinguishes the Buddha's virtues, showing long and short according to [different] capacities; the subsequent 'Chapter on Abodes' separately distinguishes the dharmic functions of bodhisattvas, clarifying differences in abodes according to capacities.
