First, differentiating characteristics: "Nature" has three kinds, namely principle, practice, and fruit. "Manifestation" (or "arising") also has three: (1) that the nature of principle is obtained and made manifest through revealing causes is called manifestation; (2) the nature of practice, because it relies on hearing and perfuming to nourish and generate the fruit, is called manifestation; (3) regarding the manifestation of the nature of the fruit, this fruit nature has no separate substance apart from them—it is precisely that principle and practice together possess what is generated through cultivation, which combine to become the fruit nature at the stage of the fruit. Responding to capacities and transforming functions is termed manifestation. Therefore, the three stages each have their own nature and manifestation, hence it is called "nature manifestation." Now, in this text, it properly discerns the latter one while simultaneously discerning the former two.
