Second, concerning dividing the stages of practice: this means that the two thousand are the real practices called stages; the stages grasp the practices to be formed, so the stages are nominal while the practices are real. There are also four senses: First, gathering practices to form stages: gathering these two thousand and dividing them into six stages. Second, altogether subsumed under stages: because the practices are all practices within the stages. Third, altogether encompassed by practices: because the essence of Samantabhadra's practices does not depend on stages, and having only self-portion and superior progress is itself the ultimate. Fourth, a single practice pervades the six stages, and a single stage covers the two thousand; being thus unhindered without destroying earlier and later, this is the practice of Samantabhadra.
