18.39

初中有三句：初文殊自就覺城，以物機初劣未發心故，就之方攝。二功德雲已去，有善財往求，顯位成故、根漸勝故、已發心故，知識不就，顯法重人尊故。三末後普賢中，知識不就、善財不往，明法界位滿無來去故。

Within the first [gate], there are three points: first, Mañjuśrī personally goes to Dhanya-nagara because the capacity of sentient beings is initially inferior and has not yet generated the aspiration [for bodhi]; only by going to them are they gathered in. Second, from Meghaśrī onward, Sudhana goes to seek them, which reveals that their stage has been established, their faculties have gradually become superior, and they have already generated the aspiration; the spiritual benefactors do not go out to meet him, revealing that the Dharma is momentous and the person is venerated. Third, in the case of Samantabhadra at the very end, the spiritual benefactor does not go out to meet him and Sudhana does not go to him, clarifying that when the stages of the dharmadhātu are fulfilled, there is neither coming nor going.
