Sixth, purity: within the individual items, there are five: (1) purity of practice conditions; (2) purity of benefit of oneself; (3) purity of benefit of others; (4) purity of fulfilled practice; and (5) purity of attaining stages—all arising successively from the preceding to the succeeding, as can be understood. Broadly speaking, there are seven types of land purity: (1) purity of the essence itself, meaning taking pure consciousness as the characteristic, etc.; (2) purity of phenomena, meaning due to pure jewels, etc.; (3) purity of enjoyment, meaning that enjoying this land extinguishes afflictions and accomplishes virtues; (4) purity of dwelling sentient beings, meaning that virtuous sentient beings fill this world, hence called pure; (5) purity of the lord, meaning the Buddha's land, etc.; (6) because it is generated by pure practices as causes, as the text states: "cultivated and accumulated through oceans of limitless practices," etc.; (7) because pure practice is itself the land, it is called pure, taking practice as the basis, as can be understood from the text. In the verses, there are nine gāthās, divided into five: first, one gāthā versifies the general number above; next, one gāthā [versifies] drawing near to good spiritual friends; next, two gāthās versify the benefit of oneself above, meaning (1) the practice of samādhi and (2) the practice of faith and forbearance; next, one gāthā versifies the benefit of others above; next, two gāthās versify the fulfillment of the two practices above; next, two gāthās versify the benefit of attaining stages.
