Third, the central theme: it takes the ocean of vows as its central theme. However, vows are of four kinds: 1. Vows of resolution: meaning solemn commitments made prior to practice, and so forth. 2. Vows of practice: these are of two kinds: first, arising simultaneously with practice; second, merely generating vows in response to matters, which itself is practice because it prevents the mind from scattering. 3. Vows subsequent to practice: meaning dedicating practice, vowing to attain bodhi, and so forth. 4. Unobstructed vows of the self-essence: meaning the great vows ultimately identical to the ocean of dharmatā, spontaneously accomplishing all affairs. Herein only vows of practice are discussed; the others pervade the meaning, as can be understood.
