Fifth, the answer regarding the fulfillment of great vows has twenty phrases. In the first natural stage, attaining all that is sought is called fulfillment of vows. First, enduring afflictions to gather beings. Second, adorning the land for the sake of beings. Third, raising offerings to the Buddhas. Fourth, guarding the Dharma. Broadly speaking, guarding the Dharma has four levels: first, guarding the Dharma of principle, meaning illuminating the principle unmixed with ignorance and the like; second, guarding the Dharma of practice, meaning practice unmixed with fame, gain, indolence, and the like; third, guarding the Dharma of teaching, meaning preaching, transmitting, and broadly propagating according to the Dharma; fourth, guarding the Dharma of fruitional function, meaning preserving and protecting images and the like. Fifth, causing the bodies of beings to be born in pure lands. Sixth, causing the wisdom of beings to enter Dharma gates. Seventh, causing the vows of others to be fulfilled. Eighth, practice without satisfaction, meaning practicing to the end of the future, making it like an instant without giving rise to weariness, and also vowing that kalpas turn according to the mind. Ninth, the causal stage of vows is consummate. Tenth, the fruitional stage of vows is perfectly pure. In the subsequent ten of superior progress: first, the great vow adorns the mind, having no worry about non-accomplishment, hence sorrowless; second, looking up to and being mindful of superior companions, progressively giving rise to their vows; third, completely vowing to be reborn, suddenly initiating all practices; fourth, being consummate, etc., constantly initiating what is practiced. The above are for the benefit of oneself. Fifth, transforming them to fulfill vows; sixth, constantly transforming without fatigue; seventh, abiding in suffering to benefit beings; eighth, renouncing pleasure to benefit beings; ninth, bestowing the fruitional Dharma; tenth, attaining the fruit of equality. The above are for the benefit of others.
