Second, in the preface to emitting light, there are six [points]: first, the person emitting the light; second, the place from which the light emerges, meaning that just as one can stand firmly only when one's toes press the ground, this symbolizes that in these ten abidings the stage is achieved and there is no regression, hence called "abiding"; third, the number of lights; fourth, the marks of the light, meaning that because the marks of understanding are brilliantly manifest it is called "wondrous color," which is also its name; fifth, the places illuminated by the light, which are what was analyzed above in the "Chapter on Illumination and Awakening," and are also where the various passages conclude with universal pervading. In the preceding chapter, the Buddha's spiritual power made manifest the various bodies beneath the bodhi tree; now the light illuminates beneath the tree and up in the heavens; sixth, the Tathāgata and the great assembly, and so forth, clarifying that what is illuminated and manifest pervades together as one assembly of the dharmadhātu's perfect radiance. Further, it is known from the phrase "beneath the tree and at the peak of Mount Sumeru."
