First, regarding the explanation of the title, there are four meanings: 1. The dharmas of practice of later stages shine down and clarify the earlier stages—this clarification is the Dharma itself. 2. “Clarifying” is the teaching, and “Dharma” is the meaning. 3. “Clarifying” is wisdom, and “Dharma” is the object; these two are the clarity of Dharma and the Dharma of clarity. 4. Wisdom and practice departing from defilement are named “clarifying” in terms of their own characteristic; being clarifying can serve as a model, and therefore it is called “Dharma.” Furthermore, the brilliant illumination of all practices conforming to the nature is “clarifying”; being a wondrous model in its intrinsic essence, it is also called “Dharma.” Hence it is called “Clarifying the Dharma”; if it were not so, it would be darkness, and thus also not Dharma.
